U.S. Army Garrison - Fort Detrick

FREDERICK, Md. - Staff from Fort Detrick participated in the Great Frederick Fair here Sept. 17 as part of Military Appreciation Day.

The event began with the Fort Detrick Color Guard, followed by Col. Stephen Middlecamp, the U.S. Army Garrison commander at Fort Detrick, who thanked the community for its continued support.
“I am proud to represent the service members of Fort Detrick. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, as well as the thousands of members of our civilian workforce as it is both a privilege and an honor to take part in Military Appreciation Day during the Great Frederick Fair,” said Middlecamp, a native of Baltimore.

Several military vehicles participated in this year’s parade, showcasing Fort Detrick’s wide array of military operations. The Bravo Company 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, a Marine Corps Reserve unit stationed here, paraded the Light Armored Vehicle-25. The LAV 25 is an eight wheeled amphibious reconnaissance vehicle that has been used by the Marine Corps since the early 1980’s.

The Marines were led by Maj. Stephen Ray from Swainsboro, Georgia, and 1st Sgt. Phil Collins from Baltimore. The drivers were Lance Cpl. Ryan J. Checco from Silver Spring, Maryland and Lance Cpl. Hector E. Gutierrez Jr. from Strasburg, Virginia.

The Fort Detrick Fire Department also participated, with members driving their 2004 Pierce Heavy Duty rescue truck. The truck, which was operated by Firefighter Jerry Dorsey from Frederick, Maryland and Firefighter Brandon Martin, Hannover, Pennsylvania, carries rescue equipment for confined space and water-related emergencies.

In April, the Fort Detrick Fire Department was named the Best Medium-Sized Department in the Army for 2013.

During the year of 2013, the Fort Detrick Fire and Emergency Services responded to 1,560 calls on the base and in the Frederick and Silver Spring communities.

The Great Frederick Fair is in its 152nd year.
