FORT HOOD, Texas – Growing up in northern Texas, he became fascinated with golf at an early age while hitting the links with his mother, father and grandfather on a course his grandfather helped establish.

Now donning the uniform of the U.S. Army, he is preparing to represent the Air Cav and Fort Hood during a tournament held by one of golf’s most respected organizations – the Ben Hogan Foundation.

“I’ve been playing golf since I could walk,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Nash Armstrong, brigade mobility officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. “It’s relaxing, and I always enjoy the camaraderie and competition.”

In high school, Armstrong achieved multiple golfing awards, including being named Farwell High School’s most valuable golfer three years in a row, before going on to play for Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas, for a semester.

“As I grew up, I began to take the game more seriously,” he said. “I always want to improve my game and usually find time to practice twice a week. My dream would be to be on the Professional Golfers Association tour.”

After a brief stint in college, Armstrong decided to enlist in the Air Force in 1995, where he spent more than 13 years working as an air transportation specialist. After deciding to become a warrant officer, he submitted his packet to the Army with high hopes, he said.

“I wanted to go warrant as a mobility officer,” he explained. “When elements of the brigade deploy, it gives me the opportunity and responsibility to ensure all personnel and equipment get to where they’re supposed to go – whether it’s on planes, trains or automobiles.”

Despite his demanding job, Armstrong still finds time to squeeze in a few rounds on the course and even won first place in the A-flight category during Fort Hood’s Post Golf Tournament last year – an event open to all active duty Soldiers.

Recently, he was a top finisher in the post’s golf scramble Aug. 22 and took first place in first flight during Fort Hood’s 13th Annual Club Championship held at the Courses of Clear Creek Aug. 30 and 31.

“This most recent win meant a lot to me, probably the most of any,” he said. “The first day of the tournament, I blew up and shot a ten [over par]. But I came back strong the next day and shot only four over. It was a good feeling to make a comeback and take first in my flight.”

Due to his recent victories, he was one of two Fort Hood Soldiers invited to participate in the upcoming Ben Hogan Invitational at Fort Worth, Texas, Sept. 12.

“I spoke to the [event] founder, Robert Stennett, and he expressed to me how excited he was to have a couple of Fort Hood Soldiers attending,” he said. “I’m proud to perform in this tournament and to represent 1ACB, the Cav and Fort Hood.”

Staff Sgt. Nicholas Orr, brigade mobility noncommissioned officer with HHC, 1st Air Cav. Bde., has worked alongside Armstrong for a year and a half and said he has high hopes for him during the upcoming event.

“Other than being a great golfer, he’s a hard worker and a great, knowledgeable boss,” the Morris, Illinois, native said. “For him to be chosen to participate – that’s by itself a big deal. I’m excited for him and hope he does well.”
