JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. - The latest iteration of the annual Seaport Operations Company Exercise, or SPOC, concluded Aug. 30, 2014. The joint forces exercise led by the United States Army Reserve Command (USARC) was held Aug. 24-30.
Its purpose was to assess the abilities of Army Reserve units to work closely with first responders and other branches of the military. The 1189th Transportation Brigade of the Deployment Support Command assists all the units that come to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, for this extensive training exercise.
In times of war, the skills developed during this training are useful during all phases of theater development. Railhead operations, preventative maintenance, risk management, and safety are just a few of the many areas the participating units evaluate their soldiers in.
This exercise is unique in its ability to test troops in all aspects of their individual warrior tasks, as well as, how well the units operate collectively. The focus is to complete the mission, rain or shine.
Training activities range from equipment staging, accountability, and documentation to casualty treatment and evacuation. Upon completion of the mission, units conduct after-action reports to reflect on their performance and to identify both strengths and weaknesses.
