FORT BRAGG, N.C. – As the Army continues to move forward to reshape the force and reduce troop numbers, Army leaders are charged with the responsibility of ensuring their formations are well informed of the upcoming changes.

Maj. Gen. Darrell K. Williams, 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) commanding general, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Nathaniel J. Bartee, 1st TSC command sergeant major, held a training and leader development conference for officers and noncommissioned officers of the command, Aug. 12 at the Pope Theater here.

The conference focused on officer management and how the strength of the force is changing.

We want to make sure Soldiers are set up for success, said Bartee. From the senior leader down to the lowest level, we want the Soldiers informed.

During the discussion the leadership discussed how the Army is downsizing and what Soldiers need to do in order to stay competitive.

“We know (The Army) is getting rid of people but we never really had a clear understanding of how they were doing it,” said Sgt. 1st Class Shemeka Watkins, 1st TSC G4 maintenance NCO. “Now we have a better understanding of what we need to do if we don’t want to be in that number.”

Williams discussed the way ahead with reducing strength numbers for the force including the process on how the board works to eliminate officer ranks.

It was great having the senior leadership provide insight to how our future will be, said Capt. Bryant Skinner, 1st TSC budget officer. In order to understand the future you have to understand the past with the direction the Army is going.

Williams and Bartee closed the session with an overview of the Black Jack Standards for the 1st TSC. The Black Jack Standards are a tool for Soldiers within the 1st TSC to use as a guideline and to lead by example. Soldiers are required to carry a standards card as a reminder of what it means to be a leader and take care of each other.

“Soldiers and families will always be first and that is what today is all about,” said Williams. “We are trying to put you in the position to take care of your family and your career.”
