RAF MILDENHALL, United Kingdom - The parade was the final event for the 2014’s summer reading program which included various special activities such as a “Paws to Read” poetry contest for teens, a family and pet photo contest, as well as visits throughout the summer from the Feltwell Veterinary Clinic, Guide Dogs for the Blind, 100th Security Forces Squadron Military Working Dogs and Pets Enriching Troops.

Organizers encouraged participants to wear a costume if they wished, and staff from the library offered the children masks so they could dress up as an animal of their choice.

“This year’s reading club theme, ‘Paws to Read,’ was all about animals, so we thought it would be fun if the kids had a chance to dress up as animals and bring their pets,” said Sharon Amann, 100th Force Support Squadron Library director from San Antonio.

More than 40 Team Mildenhall children and their parents attended the event. This event enabled families to come together with friends, and make new ones while enjoying a program focused on fun and educational activities for children.

“This really was a mixed turn-out,” Amann reflected. “There were lots of library regulars, but also many new faces I hadn’t seen before. Let’s hope they come back for story times and other library programs.”

The children met real animals in a safe environment. The dogs stayed on leashes to ensure the safety of those involved. The dog handlers led their pets around the library while children walked alongside and could pet the dogs.

“The parade was really fun. I got the chance to bring my own dog, Tansie, who I adopted a week ago and several others brought their dogs, including some from the P.E.T. organization,” she continued. “I counted at least 10 dogs out there, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to bring their pets to the parade.”

Not all children have pets, but they got involved, not only by meeting
the attending pets but by also making their own or bringing their favorite stuffed animal to take part.

“I was really tickled by the stuffed animals the kids brought. One little girl had a pull-along wooden dog that was so darn cute,” Amann explained.

Following the parade, everyone enjoyed pizza and dessert. Each family and all parade participants received a special “Paws to Read” coin for the event.

“It’s so nice that the Department of Defense sponsors the summer reading program with all the incentive prizes,” said Amann enthusiastically. “We’re already planning for next year’s program ‘Read to the Rhythm.’”
