JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - The Army is a demanding lifestyle that can bring stress on a daily basis, but single Soldiers on Joint Base Lewis-McChord got a chance to boost their resiliency and see that the Army isn’t all work and no play.

Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers hosted a Single Servicemember Day at the JBLM Warrior Zone Aug. 7. Service members spent a day away from work unwinding and playing basketball, poker, and Call of Duty.

“First of all, I want to thank all the commands for allowing our Soldiers and service members to participate today,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Bryan, JBLM command sergeant major. “Back in 1989, the Army figured out they needed to do something for our single service members, and this is why we have the BOSS program.”

Service members who participated in the event welcomed the resiliency-focused day filled with activities with their friends.

The blocks surrounding the Warrior Zone were barricaded off in block-party fashion and music blared from the DJ booth. Funnel cakes were the only thing missing from the circus-like atmosphere, but the free doughnuts made up for it.

Spc. Alexander Boehm, a wheeled vehicle mechanic in the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, spent his morning off making his 2008 Honda Civic SI sparkle before entered it into the event’s car show.

“This event helps boost morale,” said Boehm, who compared the event to a weekend in the middle of a week. “It gives single service members a chance to meet other single service members during time away from work.”

Every corner of the event had something different to try. Some service members tested their baseball skills at the speed pitch booth and the batting cages and others played in a Call of Duty tournament.

“Getting days like this is awesome for any service member,” said Spc. Israel Gaudfeliciano, a horizontal construction engineer in the 555th Engineer Brigade. “Sometimes the job load is stressful, so this gives us time to unwind and have fun.”

Gaudfeliciano returned from Afghanistan in October and said he would welcome more days like this to relieve stress.
