FORT BLISS, Texas - In the fast-paced world of a Soldier, getting a quick meal can often mean sacrificing good nutrition. The “Strike Hard” dining facility (DFAC) stepped up to compete with the fast-food market, by offering a grab and go service with healthy choices during the breakfast and lunch hours for troops in 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.

The goal of “Grab and Go” is to offer Soldiers a quick breakfast and lunch meal option that will include items from the Army’s Go For Green Food program. Items include: boiled eggs, turkey bacon, grilled chicken, and other high performance foods. In addition to some fast food options such as the usual burgers and hotdogs, healthy food choices will include fresh fruit, yogurt, and milk.

Sgt. 1st Class Nina McMillon, food service specialist assigned to 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment, and the “Strike Hard” DFAC manager, said it’s all about being the restaurant of choice – with great service.

“With us competing with Burger King, McDonald’s, and everything else, we’re trying to implement something like that, but also keep it healthy as well. Our main reason for opening up “Grab and Go” is because (fast service) appeals to Soldiers,” said McMillon.

Spc. Ajina Patterson, a food service specialist and DFAC worker said, “It’s a quicker way for them to grab their food because as Soldiers, we’re always on the go. So, with that being said, they can just get their food and go.”

Pfc. Carlos Avilez is already pleased with the service. “I’m glad they started doing it. It’s a lot more convenient than waiting in the regular line where people have a lot more time for lunch, but those that are in a hurry like me can grab and go, and get back to work,” he said.

“This is our trial and error period, we’ve had a couple of little bumps with our drink machines, but in order to make sure the Soldiers had something to drink, we just used juice jugs and they were happy with that. As the week goes on, you’ll see more items out there. So it’s only going to get better in coming weeks”, said McMillon.

The “Grab and Go” service will soon be available at other Fort Bliss dining facilities as 1st Armored Division continues to look for ways to expand garrison meal options for Soldiers.
