MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. – Marine Corps Air Station New River Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Marines received the 2013 Joint Operations Support Airlift Center Squadron of the Year Award and the 2013 Naval Aviation Safety Award in a ceremony held at the C-12 hangar aboard the air station, July 25.

Marine Corps Air Station New River Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Marines received the 2013 Joint Operations Support Airlift Center Squadron of the Year Award and the 2013 Naval Aviation Safety Award in a ceremony held at the C-12 hangar aboard the air station, July 25.

The JOSAC award, presented to the squadron for the sixth consecutive year, is one of six annual awards given to operational support airlift units by JOSAC as a means of recognizing units’ dedication and service to the Department of Defense OSA program.

Units are selected based on factors such as their cooperative spirit, flexibility, flight hours, number of missions scheduled per aircraft and percentage of missions provided to other services.

The Naval Aviation Safety Award is given to a unit for exhibiting exceptional safety standards during aircraft operations.

During 2013, H&HS completed a total of 1,388 JOSAC support flight hours on 163 missions, transporting 636 passengers and 19,020 pounds of cargo.

Sgt. Christopher Skiles, H&HS flight planning supervisor, attributed the squadron’s continued success to their constant availability and willingness to support flight operations.

“Our goal is to outfly every unit there is,” Skiles said. “We were more available and we did more than every other unit. That what makes us stand out.”

The squadron’s day-to-day mission includes ensuring all their pilots are current according to the Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization manual, said Sgt. Bradley Maust, H&HS flight operations clerk.

They also make their aircraft available to transport passengers to the maximum daily hours they can, he said.

“It is a rewarding feeling knowing that we are being recognized by the agency that tasks us with these missions’ day in and day out,” Maust said. “We have set a standard for ourselves to remain available as much as we can to support all personnel requesting our services.”

Col. Timothy M. Salmon, MCAS New River commanding officer, presented the awards to Lt. Col. Walter S. Lee, H&HS commanding officer, commending him and his squadron for setting a standard of excellence.

“Many squadrons, when they receive an operations award, don’t do so well on safety,” Salmon said. “When one goes up, sometimes the other goes down. You have done both, Marines. We are very fortunate here at MCAS New River to have the H&HS we do.”

Lee, who had only a week left as commanding officer of the squadron, thanked his Marines for their stellar performance and hard work.

“These awards are a tribute to your professionalism,” Lee said. “I couldn’t be more proud of you.”
