ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- The U.S. Army's second highest ranking civilian official was briefed on the global operations of the 20th CBRNE Command (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives) during a visit here July 29.
Under Secretary of the Army Brad Carson visited the post to learn about the chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive-focused organizations on Aberdeen Proving Ground's Edgewood Area in Maryland's science, technology and security corridor.
Brig. Gen. JB Burton, the commanding general of the 20th CBRNE Command, briefed the under secretary on the command's footprint, with two EOD groups, a chemical brigade and CBRNE Analytical and Remediation Activity on 19 military installations in 16 states. Burton described the command's global efforts to counter Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), eliminate CBRNE threats and defeat Improvised Explosive Devices.
Carson also met with the leaders of the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense, U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center and Executive Office Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives.
Appointed as the U.S. Army under secretary on March 27, 2014, Carson previously served as the general counsel of the Department of the Army.
