CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti – Forty-eight Sailors assigned to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti volunteered in part of a Chief Petty Officer 365 (CPO 365) program community relations cleanup project, July 27.

In the extreme heat of Djibouti, the volunteers focused their efforts directly outside the base beautifying more than 100 yards of fence line filling over 40 garbage bags with debris.

“It is important for us to remember that we are not just here for personal growth and development,” said Command Master Chief, Keith A. Rousseve. “With the active involvement in CPO 365 here at Camp Lemonnier, we contribute not only to the command but also to the Djiboutian community.”

The cleanup project brought together Sailors with a unified goal of contributing to their leadership performance along with providing community involvement.

“Projects like this are not only important but they are a real eye opening experience,” said Steelworker 1st Class David Brown. “This is a great way to really get involved with the CPO 365 program, develop better relationships with my fellow service members, and show that we are all here to support one another and the community.”

Community service plays a pivotal part in the CPO selectee season and gives them the ability to make a difference. All participants learn how to support each other while contributing to a stronger Navy.

"Community service makes us better Sailors, and allows for a more successful operation here at Camp,” said Rousseve.

CPO 365, a yearlong development and training process for first class petty officers, was first introduced in 2010 under former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Rick West. It includes two phases, the first of which begins annually in September. Phase two of training begins when CPO selectees are announced and concludes with the anchor-pinning ceremony making the selectees full-fledged Navy chiefs.
