FORT DIX, N.J.- In a change of scenery from the D.C. Armory where they typically train, soldiers from 372nd Military Police Battalion of the District of Columbia National Guard participated in “Warfighter” training, July 14 – 25 at Fort Dix, New Jersey, to hone their skills in the Military Decision Making Process.

Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin L. Suchy, an instructor from the Mission Command Training Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, said that the process revolves around taking a higher, constructed order and utilizing the methodical process found within the MDMP to create a solution. Trainees also learn to enact the process through the resources available.

This solution helps in every capacity of the training to guide their course of action. It influences if, when, and how they should respond during a scenario.

Through the MDMP process, leaders utilize troop-leading procedures to distribute, implement and perfect a developed plan to successfully accomplish the mission despite obstacles like IED attacks.

Command Sgt. Maj. Juan Mitchell, senior enlisted leader of the 372nd MP BN said, “They have to look at a map of the land of operation and identify where the militants reside and look at route reconnaissance to see the best ways to transport materials. This is done by studying roads and figuring out what the enemy forces have such as uniform, personnel, food and other items. This, in turn, helps in evaluating a given mission, the course of direction to pursue, then comparing courses of action and disseminating missions to subordinate units.”

The MDMP process utilizes the knowledge of every soldier from private to lieutenant colonel.

Capt. Nicholas T. Glover, a 372nd MP BN supply officer, said, “The other night they asked me as (supply), how long would it take to offload palettes off a (military truck).I deal with overall logistics and had no clue so I referred to my non-commissioned officer who knew immediately that it was 35 minutes.”

Occurrences such as this show the value of training and pivotal role each member has in this process.

Sgt. Etop Ekanem, an administrative professional for the 372nd MP BN said, “This is at the heart of what the Army does which is plan and execute. This is my first time in a scenario like this and the last time I did something similar was in (Warrior Leader’s Course) and we didn’t go through the stages like in this scenario. I am originally (administrative) but to go through this type of training is really valuable. This is some of the best training I have had in my military career”.

“We are a young staff and we have a lot of cross-coordination but we learned a set of guidelines that refines and improves our process from this exercise by showing the in-depth role of each member,” said Glover.

According to Ekanem, the training definitely promoted the concept of teamwork. “When (Brig.) Gen. (Renwick) Payne came to visit, he used the metaphor of rowing a boat to emphasize the importance of teamwork. That was definitely the goal of the exercise because each part builds on a subsequent part (from administration to signal) and we each get to see the detailed work of each section.”

Suchy said, it’s really pivotal for training like this because the quick and defined execution of a plan by a battalion affects the lives of everyday soldiers. The better the plan and implementation, the better the outcome which ensures a safer return for soldiers.
