ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. – Airmen of the 54th Air Refueling and 58th Airlift Squadrons experienced history from the inside of a U.S. Army Air Forces C-47 Skytrain military transport aircraft in the Freedom Community Center during an Airlift and Tanker Association tour July 23, 2014.

Kay Nehring, World War II Airborne Demonstration Team Foundation deputy chief of staff, showed the Airmen footage taken by her father, U.S. Army Air Forces Lt. Charles Nehring, who piloted a plane over Corregidor, an island in the Philippines.

Nehring explained that, due to censors, her father could not give certain details about his flights in his letters, but by comparing them to his footage and flight logs, he helped her piece together the missing information on his missions.

This unique perspective allowed the Airmen to see where we came from as they compared the imagery and terms to what they are familiar with in today’s Air Force.

“The footage showed me a bond with people doing the same mission before us in a time of greater conflict,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Winston Hill, 97th Training Squadron student flight commander. “It was intriguing. Her recounting the events and reading those letters stuck with me.”

Lieutenant Nehring was a pilot during the Pacific campaign. The footage showed scenes looking over Corregidor from inside the cockpit and scenes from the daily lives of the service members between missions.

The narrative given to accompany the footage was derived from the detailed information that Lieutenant Nehring wrote in his letters home, including how he and his crew handled a damaged engine during a mission.

“The briefing made me think of our heritage and how far we’ve come in the airlift community,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Kristopher Norwood, 97th Operations Group deputy commander. “It’s cool to get inside their personal lives and see what they were going through. You see that heritage built from generation to generation when you see that footage.”
