SASEBO, Japan - The Chief Petty Officer’s Mess and First Class Petty Officer’s Mess, from forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), hosted a CPO 365 Leadership 5K run July 25, 2014 for all U.S Navy commands and ships aboard Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS), Japan.

SASEBO, Japan (July 25, 2014) - The Chief Petty Officer’s Mess and First Class Petty Officer’s Mess, from forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), and Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS), Japan’s top leadership hosted a CPO 365 Leadership 5K run today for all U.S Navy commands and ships assigned to CFAS.

The event was targeted toward bringing out the triad of division officers, chiefs and first classes from all around CFAS. The purpose of the run was to build team spirit and camaraderie within each division and command represented, as well as giving all of the runners a chance to interact with members from other commands they may not see on a daily basis.

“It’s not that often that BHR is in port, and we are able to have the opportunity to clasp hands and do a project together with CFAS,” said Bonhomme Richard Command Master Chief Carlton Duncan. “I wanted to capitalize on the opportunity right now; I mean the timing is perfect for us all to get together, and have a real big event, so here we are.”

Bonhomme Richard Chief Intelligence Specialist Sha’keena Sparks led the planning committee of Chiefs and First Classes who made this event possible.

“It does your heart good to know that the process still works, that the spirit is still alive and that we can accomplish any goal when we work together and put our minds to it,” said Sparks.

One first class petty officer said how he felt to be a part of the leadership run event.

“A great sense of camaraderie and just 100% spirit, togetherness and blue and gold all the way,” said Aviation Ordnance 1st Class Christopher Sorrells, from Navy Munitions Command East Asia Division Detachment aboard CFAS. “It was good to see everybody get together and run. It was motivating and inspiring. I think we need to do more of it. It’s good to talk afterwards, and network, and it shows the junior Sailors something to aspire to be.”

For one chief petty officer, it was a chance to reconnect with his past in a special way.

“These events are good because you get to pair up with folks you haven’t seen in a long time,” said Bonhomme Richard Chief Information Systems Technician Mario Antretter. “It was great because I just met up with my sister division RDC, and it’s been 12 years since boot camp.”

Another chief petty officer saw the event from another perspective.

“It gives us an opportunity to get together and realize that we are one unit and we all work together to get one thing done,” said CFAS Security Chief Master-at-Arms Jacob Moore.

Bonhomme Richard’s Command Master Chief expects to have more leadership runs in the future aboard CFAS.

“Hopefully this will be a seed that we plant to start something much bigger, much better and it won’t be just a one-time event, it will be something annual that we can continue,”
