PAKTIYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan - The Operational Coordination Center-Regional team from the 3d Cavalry Regiment has taken over for their counterparts from 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) in the Afghan National Army Forward Operating Base Thunder.

The OCC-R is a coordination center that brings together the ANA, Afghan Uniformed Police, Afghan Border Patrol and the National Directorate of Security to work together.

“The OCCR is the link between all the different organizations that allows them to better communicate between agencies,” said Staff Sgt. Jacob Thielbar, Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Cav. Regt., Security Force Assistance Advisory Team noncommissioned officer in charge. “Simply talking to one another is a large step in securing the country.”

In the past, the Afghans have had difficulties with their security forces not working well together. The OCC-R program was created during the rebuilding of Afghanistan to overcome the mindset that the different agencies should compete.

“Historically they didn’t work with one another,” said Capt. Sean Hayball, Regimental HHT, 3d Cav. Regt., SFAAT team member. “The members of the 3d Cav. Regt. OCC-R team look forward to aiding the ‘center’ in order to enable them to meet and over come the historical challenges placed before them.”

The 3d Cav. Regt. will be the last advisors for the OCC-R at FOB Thunder. They will finish the work that has been going of years. The Afghan people are on the edge of self-reliance; the work the 3d Cav. Regt. will ensure that when the International Security Assistance Force leaves, the national security will not.
