JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - Customers and employees of the commissary on the Fort Myer portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall are again working together to collect donations for this year’s Feds Feed Families campaign running through Aug. 27.

And thanks to the quick thinking of one commissary employee, it’s now easier than ever to donate to the effort that collects nonperishable food and personal hygiene items for local food banks.

Grocery manager Keith Burke came up with the idea of prepacking brown bags with items off the program’s most-needed list so customers could easily pick them up, go through the check-out and leave the bag at the store. The pre-packed bags sell for $10. Assistant commissary officer Cathy D. Riddick said the store replenished its supply of filled bags three times by the fifth day of the promotion.

“People don’t have to get a full bag like this,” she said. “Customers can pick up one, two or three items to donate.”

Among the items on the most- needed list are low-sodium or no salt canned vegetables; canned fruits; condiments; multigrain cereals; canned soups; individually packaged snacks; crackers; peanut butter; brown and white rice; pasta; 100 percent fruit juices; paper products, cleaning supplies and hygiene items. For a complete item list, visit www.capitalareafoodbank.org.

Last year, commissaries collected almost 740,000 pounds of food, or about 39 percent of the Department of Defense’s total, for items for local food banks. In 2013, DoD collected over 1.9 million pounds of food and donations of the entire federal government’s total of 9 million pounds. Riddick said the Fort Myer commissary has collected approximately 1,500 pounds of food for the program so far this year.
