CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti - Thirty-two joint service students graduated the Marine Corps Corporals Leadership Course 526-14 July 22, 2014 at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti.

The guest speakers for the ceremony were U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Wayne Grigsby Jr., Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa commanding general, and U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Bonnie Skinner, CJTF-HOA command senior enlisted leader.

The course was fourteen-days long, six days-a-week and included curriculum on administration, communication, coalition operations, joint operations, leadership and warfighting. Students were evaluated on performance, comprehensive exams and general knowledge.

“This course is authorized by Marine Corps University; the instructors are sergeants and the course director is a Staff NCO,” Skinner said. “What better way to get mentored, led and trained than by your fellow non-commissioned officers.”

Sgt. Maj. Skinner spoke to the graduates during the ceremony about their accomplishments and what it means to be a leader in today’s military.

“It is important that we recognize these NCOs when they are getting promoted, reenlisting and other significant events such as this graduation,” Skinner said. “The students have learned a lot from this course, but most of all, have learned a lot from one another.”

This course was offered to E-4s from each service within Camp Lemonnier and CJTF-HOA. There were four facility advisors and nine instructors from the joint and coalition services who helped facilitate the course.

“CJTF-HOA is a leadership factory; this course focuses on leadership,” said U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Carlos Garza, CJTF-HOA Range Coordination SNCO in-charge and Corporals Leadership Course Director. “Out in a fire fight, it is the junior NCOs in the field that are leading the fire teams and squads. These junior NCOs are learning to make decisions early in their careers.”

While the students were learning about curriculum from the instructors, they were also learning about the other service’s operations and traditions from the other students. They were learning how to network and build professional relationships.

“Being in this course, the students from different services were seen eating together, walking together and working out together; the students built new relationships, new friendships,” Garza said. “In the future, they might need assistance from a certain section of the base and now they have a good resource to reach out to.”
