JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - The deputy commanding general of the Republic of Korea Army visited Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., July 17-18.

Gen. Seonwoo Park, deputy commanding general, Republic of Korea and United States Combined Forces Command, met with leaders of I Corps and 1st Special Forces Group to discuss strategies concerning Pacific Command’s rebalance to the Pacific mission.

“I’ve been hearing so much great news about the rich history and traditions of I Corps,” Park said through his interpreter. “I have forged this very special relationship with I Corps and I am happy to come to Seattle to see the great members of this unit.”

Park’s stay in Washington was more than meetings and briefs on strategies. His visit included a trip to Seattle to get a feel of American culture.

During his two-day stay at JBLM, Park received a brief on the capabilities of the M1126 Stryker and had his first ride in the vehicle, traveling to the Mission Command Training Center.

Park said he gained a better understanding of U.S. culture as well as strengthened the bond between the ROK and U.S. forces ensuring the two nations continue to work together successfully.

“I’m very much pleased to see all of this great effort going on,” Park said. “For us, men and women in uniform, rehearsal is top priority and I can see that everything has been rehearsed already. I believe that if I Corps is ever called to the Korean Peninsula they are the forces that will lead us to victory.”

Park’s visit was one of several from high-ranking military officers of America’s Pacific partner nations over the past few months. According to I Corps plans officer, Col. David Danikowski, the visits support the President’s Defense Strategic guidance to mold the tactical environment in the Pacific region.

“I Corps is committed to supporting a theater campaign support plan through exercises, security partnering, forward presence, engagements and home station activities,” he said.
