    Story by Cpl. Emmanuel Ramos

    15th Marine Expeditionary Unit

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Lance Cpl. Benjamin J. Provoznik, spends his days staying current on situations happening around the world. When he’s not briefing officials you can find him relaxing playing video games.

Provoznik, an intelligence specialist for the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, started playing video games as a way to bond with his older brother, now he enjoys the challenges gaming has to offer.

In this interview the 19 year old from Wilmington, Ohio, tells us how he uses his passion for gaming to help him stay dedicated to problem solving as a Marine in his unit.

Q: When did you first get into gaming?
A: I first got into gaming as a kid. My older step-brother would always play and he’d let me play along. We would spend a lot of time trying to beat each other or try to outdo each other.

Q: Do you apply your gaming skills to what you do at work?
A: Not everything. Gaming is just fun for me. I apply the same effort when it comes to tackling a problem. I don’t just give up when it gets hard. For the most part this is something just for me that I enjoy.

Q: What was the first game you played?
A: The first game I ever played was Super Smash Bros. for the [Nintendo 64]. Me and my brother would stay up late and play that game. It was always a competition between us to see who could be the best. He would usually beat me, but I eventually got better and beat him.

Q: What do you like most about playing with video games?
A: I like it because of the challenge it offers. You can spend a lot of time trying to figure out a way to overcome the challenges and find ways around obstacles. It also takes away from the stress of work. At work you’re always briefing [very important people] or higher [ranking officers] so it can get stressful. When you come home and play video games, you win or you lose, but you always have a good time.

Q: How do you feel when you’re playing?
A: It’s pretty exciting when you win, but when you’re losing or doing really bad, it’s frustrating.

Q: With online games, how has your gaming experience changed?
A: It’s stressful when you enter a lobby and it’s full of really good guys. You try your best and do what you can to win. The skill level is either really good or really bad.

A: What genre of games do you enjoy playing?
Q: Anything that offers a challenge really. My favorite game so far has been Black Ops 2, but I like sports games too. Just anything that offers a challenge and that I can play with my friends and just have a good time.
