GEILENKIRCHEN, Germany - Children from different countries, different backgrounds, with and without handicap met each other at the 9th annual Glider Flight Youth Camp on an airfield in Aachen-Merzbrück, Germany.
The 96 children had five eventful and exciting days, from July 4 to July 8, full of fun, action and fellowship.
Beside sports and art classes, the young people had the chance to fly a glider together with one of the flight instructors of the LV Aachen. For lots of them it was the first flying experience of their life. The dream of flight came true.
On the last day of camp Maj. Gen. Andrew M. Mueller, the E-3A Component commander, invited all the children to have a look behind the curtain of aviation with a visit to NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen.
During the tour, the NATO Firefighters showed their equipment and explained their task. As the water spouted from one of the trucks, everyone welcomed the cooling water mist on that sunny day. At the air traffic control tower, everybody enjoyed the panoramic view of the Component. One of the air traffic controllers discussed the importance of their job.
The highlight of this day was, without a doubt, the view inside the E-3A, where everybody was allowed to sit in the pilot seat, feeling like an aircraft commander and holding the control stick in their hands.
Introducing the Component to the young people helped broaden their horizons and realize that only the sky is the limit.
