SAN DIEGO - Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens visited Sailors aboard amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20) July 16, as part of his trip to San Diego.

“It went well. It was an awesome opportunity for Sailors to meet face to face with the MCPON and to not only hear what is on his mind but to ask questions,” Green Bay CMDCM Robert Barber said.

During the visit the MCPON pinned two Sailors, Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Wenxiu Chen and Aviation Support Equipment Technician 3rd Class Ziyun Tian, as Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialists (ESWS). Afterwards he took questions from Sailors about technological advancements, manning and new uniforms.

“It was fantastic. When I passed the ESWS Chief’s Board they asked me if I wanted to get pinned by the MCPON or at a regular Captain’s Call and I said MCPON. It was an amazing opportunity,” Tian said.

Following the question-and-answer session, the MCPON briefly toured the ship chatting with Sailors about their advancement prospects and career goals. Then while departing the ship the MCPON even stopped to take a selfie with a Sailor.

“He’s on my Facebook page and I’ve seen pictures of him taking selfies with other Sailors and I wanted one of my own. I was nervous but it was totally worth it,” Yeoman 3rd Class Daniel Jakubec said.

The crew of Green Bay is currently in the Basic Phase of training in preparation for a forward deployment to Sasebo, Japan, early next year. Green Bay will be the first San Antonio-class LPD to be forward deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility.
