CLAY NATIONAL GUARD CENTER, MARIETTA, Ga. – The 1-171 General Support Aviation Battalion is saving time and dollars by training UH-60 Black Hawk crew chiefs in a virtual trainer at the Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, Georgia. The senior flight instructor scheduled the training this July so that the aircrews could qualify quicker and score higher during the aerial gunnery range at Fort Gordon later this month.

“We have quite a few people who have never fired the M240B machine gun before,” said Staff Sgt. Justin Jones, senior flight instructor at Georgia Army National Guard’s Army Aviation Support Facility No. 2. “We brought the simulator called the Non Rated Crew Member Manned Module [NRCMMM] here to improve our crew member’s proficiency, familiarization and understanding of the capabilities of the weapon system, as it will save a lot of blade time and ammunition costs.”

The NRCMM is the crew chief version of the Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trailer (AVCATT). The AVCATT has been utilized for a few years to help place pilots in combined arms tactical situations. The NRCMM is a virtual trainer allowing units to provide familiarization training for crew members on tasks such as gunnery, sling load, water bucket, and hoist operations.

“This is just like the 240 that we fire in the aircraft,” said Jones. “There are sensors that let me know in the control room if the weapon is loaded, on safe or fire. Since I can see what they can see, I am able to help improve their site picture to get them on target quicker.”

The trailers are set up to replicate the same environment non rated crew members would encounter in the aircraft, with the technology needed to improve the quality of training flight instructors can provide.

“With two manned modules I can set up one module as a MEDEVAC aircraft and the second as a chase aircraft,” said Jones. “We run tactical scenarios that crews will face in a combat theatre. In fact the NRCMMM can be slaved to the AVCATT so that pilots and Crew chiefs can participate in the same virtual mission as a complete combat crew.”
