MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. -- With packs packed and boot laces tightened, the Marines of Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 headed off on a six-mile hike through Marine Corps Air Station New River, June 20.

MWSS-272 provides aviation ground support to enable a composite Marine Aircraft Group and supporting attached elements of the Marine Air Control Group to conduct expeditionary operations.

Carrying packs weighing approximately 60 pounds, the Marines aligned in formation and stepped off from the squadron’s motor pool.

The hike was geared toward building unit morale and camaraderie by pushing the Marines physically, said Capt. Kevin Harris, company commander Headquarters and Support Company.

“The hike was organized with the purpose to build unit morale as well as serve as an opportunity for our Marines to practice small-unit leadership,” said Harris. “The hike gave the Marines a chance to show their leadership abilities by setting the example of pushing themselves and their peers.”

As a squadron made up of many different sections including combat engineers, motor transportation specialists, and logisticians, the hike served as an opportunity for Marines who do not normally work alongside one another a chance to do so, said Cpl. Peter Lucht, MWSS-272 combat engineer.

“It was nice to see everyone from different shops working toward a common goal,” said Lucht. “The hike was great because we came together as a squadron, not just individual sections.”

Traveling through the varied terrains MCAS New River has to offer, from the paved roads, to the more challenging dirt and gravel trails toward Camp Devil Dog, the Marines pushed forward until the end.

The hike ended at the squadron’s headquarters.

“The Marines performed well,” said Harris. “The hike was outstanding. The Marines showed their determination and I am extremely proud of them.”
