PITTSBURGH - Marines of Recruiting Station Pittsburgh visited Corian Coleman at Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital July 8. The purpose of the visit was to encourage Coleman and wish him a speedy recovery before he continues with his dream of becoming a Marine.

Coleman was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh June 30 with two broken femurs, two broken ankles, a broken wrist, a broken arm and a broken jaw. The 13-year-old boy remains at the hospital recovering from multiple surgeries after he fell about 40 feet from a steel beam at an old steel mill in Glassport, Pennsylvania.

For Coleman, the recovery from his injuries will last about 10-weeks, but it’s only a small step toward his dream. He wants to someday attend the Naval Academy and become a Marine officer.

According to Coleman, he researched all the military branches and thought that the Marines were the perfect choice for him. He has wanted to be a Marine ever since he was a child.

“My grandpa was a Marine and I want to be like him,” said the eighth-grader Coleman. “You could say he is an inspiration to me.”

During the visit, Coleman had several questions for the Marines including what rank they had earned and what the ribbons on their uniforms meant.

“They represent the different things I’ve done in my Marine Corps career; I’ve been to Afghanistan and Iraq and, some of these (pointing to his ribbons), are personal awards,” said Staff Sgt. Chaichana Kulvanish, an infantry Marine currently assigned to recruiting duty. “My job is to go around and help people like you, who want to be Marines, enlist in the Marine Corps; think of us as career counselors.”

After his recovery is complete, Coleman wants to go back to playing football and hockey along with cooking; Coleman loves to cook. According to Coleman, along with becoming a Marine, he wants to, someday, be a chef.

Coleman learned a painful lesson with his fall, but he is optimistic his mistake will help other children avoid an accident like the one he suffered.

Coleman said, he won’t climb buildings again. His accident prompted the owners of the abandoned mill to remove the ladders, that way, the accident Coleman suffered won’t repeat again.
