MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Sgt. Maj. Scott L. Theakston retired from the Marine Corps with 30 years of service, handing over his position to Sgt. Maj. Robert H. Brown Jr. during the School of Infantry - East relief and appointment ceremony and retirement ceremony at Camp Geiger aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, June 27.
Theakston served as the School of Infantry - East sergeant major since March of 2010.
“Thank you for the opportunity here, I have some big boots to fill,” said Sgt. Maj. Brown, sergeant major of SOI-East. “I will do everything I can to not let the command, SOI and the Marines down in the future.”
Theakston joined the Marine Corps in 1983 and served with more than 10 various commands, with his last four years of service as the sergeant major of SOI - East, which graduated nearly 75,000 Marines from training during his tour.
“We are losing a great Marine here, he has served our country faithfully for 30 years now and he deserves this day,” said Col. Julian Alford, the head of Current Operations Branch, Plans, Policy and Operations, Headquarters Marine Corps.
Throughout the ceremony, Theakston continued to thank members of the audience for continued support throughout his career and ensured his success was only possible because of support he received from friends and family.
“I have been extremely fortunate throughout my career,” said Theakston. “I have been around the world a few times; I have experienced things that most people in the world will only read about, dream about or lie about. I have met many men and women who love this nation with a passion, who have spilled their blood defending it, have carried their wounded off of the battlefield and have mourned the loss of their brothers. I have been blessed with a family that most can only hope for, friends that are true, a wife who is a complete partner and a future where the sky is the limit.”
