This feature is the 11th in a series of air commando spotlights at Cannon. The Airmen being highlighted are recent Diamond Sharp and Hard Charger Award winners.

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. - Maintaining the balance between work, service and play can be a weighty challenge for some, but Airman 1st Class Lucas Weber, 27th Special Operations Maintenance Squadron CV-22 avionics intermediate systems technician, has made the best of his time on and off the job at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico.

His service, performance and positive attitude in and out of his shop led Weber’s supervisors and first sergeant to select him as one of June’s Diamond Sharp Award winners.

“At first, I was nervous about getting called into the shirt’s office,” said Weber. “When I found out that I had won Diamond Sharp, it was a great relief and a surprise - this is my first big award.”

As an avionics intermediate systems technician, Weber troubleshoots and repairs avionics systems on CV-22 Ospreys, and maintains the test stations and support equipment that make the repairs possible.

The ramifications of his work at Cannon and in the Air Force overall are easy to identify for Weber.

“What we do is pretty big,” he said. “Other shops may diagnose problems, but we’re the only shop in the world that works on these units.”

Though Weber takes his work seriously, he also places value on the time he spends off-base.

“You’ve got to do more than your job,” said Weber. “Be proactive with the base and the community.”

Serving as vice president for the 27 SOMXS Phantom Morale Activity Group, Weber organizes events to improve the welfare of the hundreds of Airmen in his squadron.

Additionally, he organized a team for the “Great American Cleanup” event—no mean feat, considering that the team collected more than 50 bags of trash from Clovis, New Mexico’s roadsides.

Among Weber’s more interesting volunteer projects is his participation in the opposing forces program at Melrose Air Force Range, New Mexico. Playing the role of an insurgent, Weber helps to provide training for troops who hone their skills with exercises at the range.

“OPFOR is a lot of fun,” Weber said. “Often you get rustled around by security forces guys or combat controllers. A lot of their missions get exciting.”

Amid all of his activities, Weber still finds time to work on his education and enjoy his own hobbies, including playing the drums, writing poetry and playing video games.

The Patton, Pennsylvania, native has set a trajectory for success as he approaches his third year in the Air Force.
