MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Marines and Sailors aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar can be the eyes and ears for a quick response when they discover a hazardous situation. They have multiple policies and procedures in place to make sure the air station is safe as possible.

Safety is a top priority aboard the air station and is an essential part toward mission readiness, said William Watson, safety manager aboard MCAS Miramar.

“When people are safe, it supports overall mission accomplishment,” said Watson. “It’s a saying in the Marine Corps to be aware of your surroundings, so report anything that can be a hazard.”

Precautionary routine maintenance checks, surprise inspections and safety classes prepare Marines for when a hazardous situation may present itself. The checks and assessments conducted each day ensure requirements meet the standard operating procedures set in place. The air station’s reporting process is simple, with multiple options that can be utilized day or night.

“Anytime, 24/7, if people find a situation that is considered unsafe, we have a phone that is manned 24 hours a day,” said Barry Cronin, deputy chief of police with the MCAS Miramar Provost Marshal’s Office. “It can be anything from fallen trees, missing signs or faulty traffic lights.”

To report hazardous situations call the Provost Marshal’s Office desk sergeant at (858) 577-4068 or Station Safety at (858) 577-1359.
