YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – Area II officially opened the 2014 Summer Reading Program during a ceremony at the base library here, June 14.

Yongsan Garrison commander Col. Mike Masley, Karen Masley and Command Sgt. Maj. Hodgkins were present at the ceremony to read storybooks to the children and refreshments were prepared afterwards.

Most kids came with their parents and ranged in age from kindergarteners to elementary school students. Some of the parents who attended said they brought their kids hoping they will learn to have fun reading this summer, and give them the opportunity to read and get prizes for it at the event. A sling backpack was handed out as a registration prize at the beginning of the event.

“We are hoping this will be an incentive for our kids to do more reading on their own and also get them ready for school in the fall. We are excited to encourage their love for reading,” said Kym Taylor, a mother of two children at the event.

Summer Reading Program “Paws to Read” is a six-week program that starts June 2 and ends on July 15. Children ages 5-12 earn prizes for every 210 minutes read and also teens and adults are entered into weekly drawings to earn prizes when they log their minutes.

Registration for the Summer Reading Program started June 2, 2014. Fun-filled activities are prepared for kids July 1 and July 15, 2014.
