CAMP HANSEN, Japan - Service members and families step out of their typical clothes, and pick up their outfits to disguise themselves as Superman, zombies, Jedis and many other favorite fictional characters.

Marine Corps Community Services hosted the Super Duper Cosplay Contest June 21at the Palms on Camp Hansen. The event consisted of a costume contest, trivia questions, and face painting for kids.

“My favorite part about coming out to this event is dressing up and being different,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class John Gutierrez, a hospital corpsman with Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “It gives you something to look forward to.”

The event was open for Marines, sailors and family members who all took advantage of the opportunity to dress up as their favorite comic book character and participate in the action.

“Having our Marines and sailors (participate) is important because I know that their busy working or doing deployments,” said Crystal Rivas, a Los Angeles, California, native and administrative assistant to the food and hospitality department and event coordinator. “It’s always good to provide some kind of entertainment and leisure time where they can have fun and let go.”

During the contest, each participant went up on stage where they brought their character’s personality to life during an interview about their costumes.

“My costume is an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland,” said Cpl. Tanicia L. Workman, a Broadlands, Illinois, native and basic refrigeration and air condition technician with 7th Communication Battalion, III MEF Headquarters Group, III MEF, and the overall winner of the best costume. “I’ve always enjoyed the storyline. I enjoy all the art that comes from that story, from the book to the animation, to the live-action version. All of it is great.”

The event brought more than 300 comic book fans together, and MCCS plans to hold more events like this in the future, with participants look forward to it.

“This is definitely not my first comic convention, and it definitely won’t be the last,” said Gutierrez, a San Diego, California, native.
