ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. - The 28th Force Support Squadron’s Airman and Family Readiness center teamed up with the South Dakota National Guard as part of the Hero2Hired program to organize and provide a job fair for service members and their families.

Western Dakota Tech hosted the event, with 90 employers who engaged with attendees offering employment in careers ranging from law enforcement and energy companies to medical services and entrepreneurial guidance.

“This is our second year putting on this job fair,” said Maj. Lona Christensen, SDNG employer support of guard and reserve liaison. “We knew from last year’s fair that it was going to grow quickly and with the 90 employers that are here today it’s clear that it certainly has.”

With recent force reduction program results being delivered to Airmen, the job fair linked potential separatees and retirees with employers.

“I’m here today because I am being separated from the Air Force under the quality force reduction board,” said Airman Taylor Molash, 28th Operation Support Squadron unit deployment manager assistant. “My plan now is to go to college and hopefully be able to find a part-time job to help support myself.”

Molash and other attendees facing a potential transition to civilian life can rely on experience and skills gained while in the military as employers often consider veterans desirable candidates to hire.

“Veterans are great employees,” said John Fenske, Lowe’s human resource manager.

Fenske said veterans possess a strong work-ethic with a high regard for good order and discipline. They understand the importance of teamwork and can adapt easily to the needs of the job.

He added that one out of five of their employees are service members, either active-duty or veterans, and that he aims to employ at least one member from each branch of military services.

In addition to information booths, employers conducted interviews in designated areas. The job fair ran from noon to 5 p.m. free of charge for both job seekers and employers.

“It’s great that by attending this job fair I am able to meet with so many employers in one place and have the ability to meet face-to-face rather than just being another applicant on the web,” said Master Sgt. Thomas Kessler, 28th Bomb Wing flight safety NCO.

Kessler came prepared with a professional appearance and several copies of his resume.

“There is so much I’ve learned throughout my military service that I am confident I’ll be successful out in the civilian world,” said Kessler.
