ASHLAND, Ky. - Joseph Hupp, an Ashland, Ky. native and a senior at Boyd County High School, was awarded a $150,000 Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Marine Option Scholarship during a ceremony at Boyd County High School May 29.
The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition and will pay for some of his books, as well as providing a small living stipend.
Hupp was one of only four individuals selected to receive the scholarship this year from Recruiting Station Charleston, an area covering 48,000 square miles and spanning across parts of Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
Hupp was chosen to receive the scholarship from a pool of over 200 students who had applied. He was selected by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James F. Amos, based on academic excellence, physical fitness and moral character.
At his high school, Hupp was active in the student body. He played football, ran track, was on the swim team and was elected vice president of his senior class. Additionally, he spent over 200 hours volunteering with various community organizations.
Hupp plans to major in mathematics at the University of Missouri where he will participate in the University’s NROTC program. During the summer of his junior year, he will attend Officer Candidates School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., and will receive his commission as a 2nd Lt. upon completion of his four-year degree.
While in the Marine Corps, Hupp plans to pursue a career in aviation and become an aircraft pilot, a decision that was influenced by his upbringing.
“I lived at Marine Corps Air Station New River for eight years and (aircraft) were always something I was interested in growing up,” said Hupp. “I got to see aircraft all the time and it was amazing. I would see aircraft flying and I would think, oh that is awesome, I would love to be flying that.”
Hupp also says that his father, who served 22 years in the Marine Corps, was a major influence in his life and his decision to join the Marine Corps.
“Growing up I watched my Dad, and seeing all the Corps values…honor, courage and commitment that he exemplified left an impact on me,” said Hupp. “My brother is also in the Marine Corps and it is like a family business.”
Capt. Eric Albright, the presenter of the scholarship and executive officer of RS Charleston, said that Hupp will be a welcome addition to the Marine Corps.
"Joseph has served his community with distinction, we now look forward to his service to our country as an officer in the United States Marine Corps,” said Albright.
