DALLAS — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division and two of its associated Districts earned a Gold Award from the Hermes Creative Awards Competition for their special coverage series “The JFK 50th Anniversary and the Army Corps of Engineers.”

Recognized by the award were Edward Rivera and Andre Mayeaux, Fort Worth District Public Affairs, for the feature article and video of a 57-year Fort Worth District employee remembering JFK assassination; Kent Cummins, formerly of the Little Rock District Public Affairs Office, for JFK dedication of Greers Ferry Dam feature article; and Martie Cenkci, Southwestern Division Public Affairs Office, for commentary and feature articles.

The series of articles and the video are available at www.swd.usace.army.mil/Media/JFK50th.aspx.

The 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy had special meaning for the Southwestern Division, headquartered close to the assassination site in downtown Dallas, as well as its Districts where many of the Corps projects supported by the Kennedy administration were authorized or built.

“The Kennedy years marked a time of building strong for the Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division region and for America,” said Col. Richard J. Muraski Jr., Southwestern Division commander. “Much of the infrastructure that we have today in our region, from multipurpose reservoirs to military construction and coastal protection, was built or authorized during that time. In fact, 25 new reservoirs were authorized within our region from 1960-1965. Maintaining and improving upon that infrastructure is one of our top priorities today.”

The Hermes Creative Awards, managed by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, is an international competition for creative professionals involved in the concept, writing and design of traditional and emerging media. This year, there were about 5,500 entries from 15 countries.
