SASEBO BAY, Japan – The forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) held a “Road to Homeport” training for all of its Sailors April 25-29.

The “Road to Homeport” training is designed to inform Sailors about the risks and consequences of sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape.

“We endeavor to hallmark the model of 21st Century Sailors who get it, make good decisions and drive positive change,” said Command Master Chief Carlton Duncan. “It is paramount that we provide every academic, cultural and progressive tool Bonhomme Richard’s Sailors need to be successful. We expect the results of our efforts to be nothing short of being the standard bearer of good conduct for all of Sasebo.”

Bonhomme Richard’s chapter of Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) played a major role in conducting the training, acting out real world scenarios and challenging Sailors to answer questions regarding the scenario.

“We portrayed real life scenarios top demonstrate how easy it is to get caught up in high risk situations,” said Quartermaster 3rd Class Vancia Elanor. “I think these skits will be extremely effective because we’re using Bonhomme Richard Sailors to teach these lessons instead of the typical sexual assault videos.”

The training also featured brief presentations by Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR), Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) advocates and CSADD. Each one of these organizations not only addressed the topic of sexual crimes, but provided resources for alternatives to drinking.

The “Road to Homeport” brief is one of the final evolutions for Bonhomme Richard Sailors as they wrap-up their deployment in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.

Bonhomme Richard, commanded by Capt. Joey Tynch, is the lead ship of the Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group and is currently conducting operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.
