    8th Marine Corps District

NAVAL AIR STATION FORT WORTH JOINT RESERVE BASE, Texas – Sergeant Jessica Navarro, a supply clerk with the 8th Marine Corps District, was named Marine of the Quarter for the first quarter of fiscal year 2014 for her exemplary performance in her duties.

“It’s very humbling to know that my section appreciates me and put me in for Marine of the Quarter,” she said. “As Marines, we don’t always hear ‘good job’ or want to ask for an award. It’s nice to know they think I’m doing a good job. I’m happy about it.”

This honor comes to the Houston native for her accomplishments as the district’s Property Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge and her willingness to take initiative.

“My first impression of Sgt. Navarro was that she was a hard charger,” said Gunnery Sgt. Lawrence Hudson, the district supply chief. “She was very willing to go above and beyond to get things done. When she saw something (that could be improved), she would come up with an idea, and she’d come to me and say ‘Gunny, what do you think? I think this would help us to be a better section.’”

Navarro, who has adopted the Marine Corps principle “know yourself and seek self-improvement,” participates regularly in volunteer events around the district. She constantly seeks advice from others on how to improve her performance.

“I see that she absorbs people’s recommendations and their knowledge, and she takes it, formulates her own opinion on it, and then runs with that,” Hudson said. “I think any person that can do that – listen to anybody and think with their own mind, and then make a decision – I think they’ll go far.”

As she continues seeking new knowledge, Navarro finds joy in teaching what she has already mastered to other Marines as a way of showing her appreciation for the Marine Corps, she said.

“Everyone joined (the Marine Corps) for a certain reason,” Navarro said. “The Marine Corps has given me a lot more than I could ever imagine, and the brotherhood of the Marines is something I lacked growing up, so I love being around Marines.”

Navarro is currently working on a package to attend Drill Instructor School, where she hopes to continue to inspire and teach the Marine Corps’ newest recruits.
