YOKOSUKA, Japan – The U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington’s (CVN 73) Football Club earned first place in the Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka Captain’s Cup Soccer, April 17.

The 21-member team defeated U.S. Navy Hospital 3-2 to complete their undefeated season.

“What helps us be competitive in Captain’s Cup events are our teamwork and physical fitness,” said Aerographer’s Mate 3rd Class Takeo Wadriski, from Loxley, Ala., George Washington Football Club coach. “We improved our teamwork through training and bi-weekly practices. We also helped each other condition our bodies to run for as long as 90 minutes non-stop.”

Captain’s Cup events build camaraderie, teamwork and physical fitness.

“I joined the football club when I first arrived aboard George Washington on October 2012,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Luis Cervantes, from Clearfield, Utah. “Captain’s Cup Soccer is a competitive sport that helps maintain and push my fitness to the next level. More importantly, it helps me get ready for the Navy-wide Physical Readiness Test (PRT), especially when I take the PRT in a few weeks.”

PRT is held bi-annually at every command and consists of a 1.5 mile run, situps and pushups.

“Although the PRT is focused more on an individual’s fitness level, Captain’s Cup develops friendship and strengthens teamwork,” said Wadriski. “I enjoy participating in Captain’s Cup events every year. It’s a great way to stay out of trouble and stay in shape.”

George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interest of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
