MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- The Harriotte B. Smith Library aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune reopened after four months of renovations, April 1, bringing more than 100,000 books, DVDs and other media back to the base community.

The library’s roof, wiring, lighting and sprinkler system were upgraded during the renovations.

“We average between 800 to 1,200 people a day. A lot of Marines come in here for testing, online classes, purchasing travel tickets and communicating with family and friends,” said Judy Bradford, the library’s manager.

The library staff was eager to get back to work, said Bradford.
Patti Hall, the library’s catalog librarian, said she missed seeing the patrons and the resources available being utilized.

“It’s really wonderful to have them back,” said Hall.

The day the library reopened, patrons lined up outside.
Camp Lejeune has a very diverse community that uses the library, Hall added.

The library hosts more than 700 programs for all members of the Camp Lejeune community to include story times, video game tournaments and book clubs.

There are also online resources available to patrons, such as online homework help, e-books, magazines and foreign language programs.
Patrons can also check out tablets, e-readers and portable DVD players, as well as books and other media.

The library is a place where the Camp Lejeune community can learn and be entertained.

“We have so many resources outside of books and computers,” said Hall. “Patrons can get so much entertainment and educational value from their visit.”
