SOUTH EL MONTE, Calif. – Col. James Bramble, 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command chief of staff, visited Joe Leal, Vet Hunters Project founder, at the Heroes in the Shadows 3rd Annual Homeless Veteran Stand Down held at the Whittier Narrow Recreation Area in South El Monte, Calif., April 5.

Heroes in the Shadows, a three-day event, brought together more than 40 private and governmental organizations, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, to offer nine types of services to veterans that include medical, dental, counseling and job placement.

“This is an amazing event. I like what I’m seeing here,” said Bramble. “I want all the veterans out there to know that we have not forgotten you.”

Since some homeless vets camped at the event overnight, the 693rd Quartermaster Company, led by Jacob Quan, set up tents and structures in the park. This allowed veterans to take advantage of the three-day event.

Bramble interacted and greeted both veterans and civilian volunteers. At each station, he asked questions and listened to the good work that was being done, including members of AMVETS.

AMVETS is a leading veteran’s service organization that assists veterans, their families, and the communities, ensuring veterans, past, present and future are treated with the respect they deserve. On this day, they were handing out clothing at no charge.

Bramble was impressed with the Mobile Veterans Center. This customized RV is a mobile, easily accessible, consumer-oriented facility that specializes in traumatic experiences and social/economic post-war counseling.

“The most important part of this event is that veterans, whether they served years ago or recently, are taken care of,” said Bramble. “I want to thank all the volunteers that helped out during these three days.”

Free medical screenings, both dental and physical, were given. Professional School of Beauty gave free haircuts and veterans picked up care packages from Operation Gratitude.

During the three days, hundreds of veterans from all five services were helped. Many local residents who were not veterans were also helped.
