YOKOSUKA, Japan – Navy Personnel Command’s fleet engagement team addressed Sailors from various commands stationed at Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) at the base’s Fleet Theater, April 14.

The brief focused on topics such as force management, military community management which included the new Career Waypoints information technology system, and communication with their community detailers.

“I think the seminar is good for the fleet, especially the junior Sailors,” said Navy Career Counselor 1st Class Adam Powell, a career counselor stationed aboard the Navy’s only forward deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington. “It was nice to have the fleet engagement team make a visit to get rid of the rumors, confirm correct information as well as make sure that everyone is on the same page.”

Sailors were also given the opportunity to voice their concerns after the presentation in order to make the brief more interactive and geared towards the specific needs of Sailors stationed at CFAY.

“We travel to fleet concentration areas and our mission is to bring programs to the fleet by providing training,” said Capt. Bruce Deshotel, head enlisted community manager, Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS). “We give and receive feedback from commanding officers, executive officers and command master chiefs as well as the Sailors on new programs, initiatives, and what’s new back in America. This helps us to shape policy and make our programs better.”

These briefings are designed to keep Sailors up to date on manpower levels as well as provide them with tools to success through various online programs and how they can make the most of their time in the Navy.

“Most of the information was a refresher for me,” said Gas Turbine System Technician 2nd Class Jeremy Shelvin. “It was pretty big that these Sailors get to see inside the mind of the people who coordinate with our detailers. It is something that I would definitely recommend to everyone who wants to get ahead in their career no matter if you are ship or shore.”

Yokosuka was the first visit for the Fleet Engagement Team as they travel to various bases located throughout Japan. Their next stop on their visit to Japan is Naval Air Facility Atsugi, April 16.
