ZACAPA, GUATEMALA – Brig. Gen. Alfredo Sosa Diaz and the soldiers of 2nd Infantry Brigade of the National Army of Guatemala hosted a welcome ceremony here Wednesday, March 26 for the American soldiers participating in Beyond the Horizon (BTH) 2014, that will be conducting a humanitarian operation in rural areas of Guatemala beginning next month.

Beyond the Horizon is a U.S. Army South exercise deploying military engineers and medical professionals to Central America, South America, and the Caribbean for training, while providing services to rural communities. BTH, conducted annually, is part of U.S. Southern Command's (SOUTHCOM) humanitarian and civic assistance program. Working closely with host nation forces and civilian organizations, BTH teams provide medical, dental and engineering support.

Exercise participants are composed of a Task Force (TF) of National Guardsmen and Federal Reservists from 16 States, as well as four active duty units and numerous host and partner nation personnel. This task force, know as TF Oso, will be conducting joint Humanitarian Civic Assistance (HCA) and Medical Readiness Training Exercises (MEDRETE) from March 31, 2014, to June 27, 2014, that consist of four new construction projects, one minimal cost renovation project, and six MEDRETEs.

“They will also have MEDRETEs in the towns with minimal resources,” said Sosa in his welcoming remarks. The six MEDRETEs are scheduled within the Departments of Zacapa, Chiquimula, and Jutiapa, Guatemala.

The goal of the U.S. forces during Beyond the Horizon is to improve the over-all readiness of U.S. National Guard and Reserve Forces, while providing a long lasting benefit to the people of Guatemala. During the welcome ceremony, TF OSO Commander, Col. John W. Findley, said, “We are nations with common interests, proud of the progress and partnerships we have made together, and ready to assume greater relationships in the future.”
