MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. — Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s group communications hosted the 14th annual Technology Exposition at the Two Rivers Theater here April 3.
“We have been doing this for 14 years and have held 15 shows,” said Kate Ratcliffe, the event manager with National Conference Services Incorporated.
During the expo, Marines and Sailors viewed products offered by technology companies that provide equipment to the military such as information back-up, information destruction and photo control solutions, according to Ratcliffe.
“All of the companies here are a part of the technology industry,” said Ratcliffe. “They all offer the Marine Corps something different, yet essential.”
More than 10 companies exhibited technology useful to the Marine Corps, both in garrison and in deployed environments.
“Because technology evolves fast, it is important for Marines to learn about and explore technical and tactical technology,” according to Ratcliffe.
“It is important to offer equipment that can not only be used to complete missions, but enable the Marine Corps to become more technologically advanced, that is the goal,” said Ratcliffe.
The Marine Corps supports a range of missions that require the use of technology and science.
As technology advances, the Marine Corps has to preserve its strong expeditionary roots by remaining familiar with the latest technology and remaining up-to-date with current events, according to former Gunnery Sgt. Herb McGrail, an account executive with Whitlock, an audio visual integration company.
“We are here to help the Marine Corps accomplish their mission,” said McGrail, who formerly served with 2nd Radio Battalion. “They need technology in the forward areas as well as the rear areas to be able to provide information required for troops in the field.”
The expo gave Marines at Cherry Point a opportunity to preview some new technology and gear. Junior Marines from various units at Cherry Point attended the exhibit to become familiar with the latest technology and equipment that they might see in the future, according to Cpl. Micheal R. Lopez, a tactical air defense controller with Marine Air Control Squadron 2.
“We got to view the different radios that are coming out and that is going to help a lot because we use radios all the time for aircraft,” said Lopez.
Although the main goal of the exhibit was to inform Marines on recent technology updates in communication technology, some Marines came to learn about new equipment offered to the squadrons and to stay up-to-date with the current equipment that they have.
“My junior Marines do not really know about some of the technology that we receive so we came to this. They found out a lot about how basic equipment works and what is coming out next,” said Lopez. “I learned a few things that I did not really know and I have been doing this job for almost three years.”
