JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - During National Volunteer Week the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) recognized and showed their appreciation to their volunteers during the Volunteer Awards and Recognition Ceremony held at the Officers’ Club aboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River, April 7.

During the ceremony volunteers received awards for milestones in their volunteer efforts.

Volunteers were presented with awards for milestones in their hours starting at 50 hours and going above 3,000 hours, said Rita Fountain, MCAS New River NMCRS director.

Volunteers who logged 50-1,000 hours got pens and a polo shirt, for 1,000 hour’s volunteers would get a jacket and for 2,000 and 3,000 they received a pen and pencil set.

Fountain further explained the importance of the volunteers to the NMCRS’ success.

“We are a volunteer organization and we have a small cadre of paid staff of about 150 and about 3,800 volunteers,” said Fountain. “They are the heart of the society; they are the ones who provide the majority of our services. We would not be able to function without our volunteers, they are that important.”

Fountain said volunteers are not paid for their hard work, so the NMCRS shows their gratitude by giving them an award ceremony.

“By giving out these awards, it allows us to express our appreciation; we don’t pay our volunteers so this gives them something in hand so they can say ‘wow they really do appreciate what I do,’” said Fountain. “Different things motivate different people and some people really enjoy having their hours recognized.”

Anna Jacobs, NMCRS volunteer case worker, said that the staff at the air station NMCRS does a lot to show their appreciation to the volunteers, and emphasizes it’s not just a volunteering opportunity, but a learning experience as well.

“They do a lot of different things to show us they do appreciate what we do. I love volunteering for the sake of giving, but I also get a lot out of it,” said Jacobs. “I don’t get to volunteer as much as I’d like to, but the time that I do spend I feel is all quality time.”

Fountain also said that she wanted to extend the invitation to anyone wanting to volunteer for the NMCRS.

“If anyone is interested in volunteering they can contact our office. We train and equip volunteers to do the services that we provide for the Marines and Sailors aboard the air station,” said Fountain.

The NMCRS office number aboard the air station is 910-449-6431.
