FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota National Guard and USA Today presented an award to a Fargo student at Shanley High School here today. Alivia Fraase, a junior, was one of 15 students nationwide to receive the 2014 Inspiration Award for inspiring others in their schools and communities through their courage and dedication to helping others.
Brig. Gen. Alan Dohrmann, deputy adjutant general for the North Dakota National Guard, presented the award to Fraase.
"In the North Dakota National Guard, we are in the business of leadership," he said. "From what I've come to learn about Alivia, I know that she epitomizes what leadership is all about."
Fraase, who carries a 3.79 GPA, has led her volleyball team to three straight state championship appearances with 1,219 career kills and 938 career digs. She also is a member of Shanley High School's basketball team, which won the Class A state title this past season.
Fraase coaches youth sports and provides childcare to assist children, youth and adults that need extra help. Additionally, she volunteers for various community events and organizations: Project Ignite Light, on behalf of abused kids; the Fill the Dome Project, which collects food for those in need in the Fargo-Moorhead area; and she serves as a camp counselor to inspire and provide youth with a role model.
"This is such an honor," Fraase said. "I'd like to thank the North Dakota National Guard and USA Today as well as my friends, family, coaches and teammates. I couldn't ask for better people to be around every day."
