FLORENCE, Ariz. - Soldiers from the 222nd Transportation Company, of the Arizona Army National Guard, participated in automatic weapons familiarization training at the Florence Military Reservation, from April 4 to 5.

First Lt. Tylor Hicks, a platoon leader with the 222nd TC, says this training opportunity will benefit soldiers by providing combat skills.

"It is to familiarize the soldiers with how the systems work, and gaining efficiency in weaponry tactics," he said.

Training one weekend a month, and two weeks out of the year, means time provided for training is invaluable and depends on a unit’s readiness to deploy. The training also enables units and personnel to effectively develop necessary skills.

The units, like the 222nd TC, are logistical, and a part of their tasking is to safely deliver supplies and equipment in support of military operations, said Staff Sgt. Brian Brown, a truck driver with the 1404th and the noncommissioned officer in charge of the .50 caliber range here at FMR.

"When we train in weapons systems, this expands our mission capabilities.”

Brown pointed out that while this training is always needed, units cannot always get out to a range to fire weapons, so taking advantage of this time to accurately train is critical.

“When we are at our home station, we still manage to break the weapons out to practice weapons safety procedures and familiarization, but getting out here to actually fire the weapon is not something we get to do all of the time, so it is important to get out when we can.”

Safety and proper instruction on how to use weapon systems gets the 222nd TC closer to eliminating accidents.

"The objective is that anyone will be proficient enough to use these weapons when needed," Hicks said. "We are readying the soldiers, but we're also readying the equipment, making sure our equipment is safe."
