MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines participated in the Logistics Officers’ Course field exercise in the Verona Training Loop aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, March 26.

The LOC field exercise is the final week of training and forces the students to work together to accomplish a multitude of tasks.

“The Logistics Officers’ Course field exercise is designed to be the final evaluation for officers on their ability to conduct convoy operations, run the command and control center and set up and maintain a camp site,” said Maj. Michael Vincent, the Logistics Officers’ Course manager.

The field exercise simulates Operation Blue Devil. It is designed as a 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit scenario where Combat Logistics Battalion 24 comes ashore to provide combat service support to the battalion landing team.

The students play the role of CLB 24 and they come forward in their area of operations to set up a combat service support base of operations. They are tasked by the battalion landing team, which is run by the instructors.

They started planning the field exercise the week prior, said 2nd Lt. Dave Corrigan, student at the Logistics Officers Course. Throughout the exercise they use everything they learned over the past three months.

“We ran a convoy operation a few weeks ago with only six vehicles, now we are out here with 30,” said Corrigan. “We learned how to work quickly and to pay attention to details, as well as learning how to deal with adverse weather and to be decisive.”

The instructors use this time to not only supervise and grade, but to teach the students with hands-on scenarios.

“The students run everything,” said Vincent. “The result is that they graduate with a sense of accomplishment, and they have a more in-depth knowledge of what they can do.”

The field exercise is largely supported by II Marine Expeditionary Force. They help support this exercise because many of the students will end up stationed with units in II MEF, so in the long run, the command gains better-trained lieutenants.
