YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea – The Korean National Police, who patrol the surrounding area around USAG Yongsan, were honored for their service and commitment to base security, Mar. 20.
The new KNP members and some veteran police officers were given the opportunity to tour the installation, which they previously had only been familiar with the outside walls and gates.
The KNPs were first briefed about the ROK-US Alliance. Following the briefing, Ricky Oxendine, director of emergency services on Yongsan, welcomed them and presented a certificate of appreciation to three remarkable police officers.
"I am honored to speak with you and welcome you to U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan," Oxendine said. "I know that law enforcement is not an easy profession. And when I say, ‘I thank the efforts KNPs make,’ I am sure I say it for the entire Yongsan community as well. What you are doing really makes a significant impact regarding the safety of our community."
Cpl. Lee Hayeon, policeman of Yongsan gu, who was awarded for his service, expressed his appreciation for the invitation and highlighted the importance of the ROK-US alliance and security of Yongsan garrison.
"I firstly want to thank Yongsan garrison for inviting us," Lee said. "It is truly an amazing experience for all Yongsan police station members to visit here. Yongsan garrison is one of the most important bases among many U.S. installations because it serves as a home for many headquarters including the Combined Forces Command. We are honored to be the ones ensuring its safety. I feel proud of myself as a policeman, guarding such an important installation."
Afterward, the group was invited to experience the day-to-day life of Yongsan garrison soldiers. They enjoyed lunch at the Honor's Café dining facility, and then visited the Yongsan Theater to watch the American movie, “Lone Survivor.”
There are currently approximately 110 KNP officers who partner with military police officers to protect the entire USAG Yongsan community.
