FREDERICK, Md. - City of Frederick elected officials, including Mayor Randy McClement and several city aldermen, visited Fort Detrick March 10 to meet with post commanders and lab directors, receive an overview of Fort Detrick, discuss ways to collaborate, tour the installation, and identify needs of the community and the installation.
Maj. Gen. Joseph Caravalho Jr., commanding general, U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and Fort Detrick, welcomed the elected officials at the Community Activities Center.
Caravalho touched on the unique and important work done at Fort Detrick, stating, “Research and development is necessary and must continue.”
Caravalho said, in his role as the installation commander, he is eager to maintain community ties and to get soldiers and employees out as much as possible into the community.
He stated the need for a conference center in the community and provided an update on the auditorium. Both topics generated much discussion, and all attendees agreed on the need for both.
Col. Steven Middlecamp, U.S. Army Garrison commander, touched on sole sourcing and saving resources.
Specifically, he mentioned that Fort Detrick has many of the same programs as the city, such as childcare centers and lifeguards at community pools, and that “we can work together to identify ways to sole source and save resources.”
Middlecamp also talked about Fort Detrick’s partnerships in the community with Frederick County Public Schools and the outpouring of interest in the STEM program by scientists, teachers, parents and students alike.
Commanders from the United States Army Garrison, U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Department of Health and Human Services and the 21st Signal Brigade also participated. Each leader gave a brief presentation conveying the roles and activities relevant to their respective organizations, as well as their work in the community. After each brief, there was time for discussion as well as questions and answers.
The guests were then given a tour of the installation to hear about the history of Fort Detrick, the programs and services available, as well as see ongoing construction projects, to include the Nallin Farm Gate and the USAMRIID replacement building.
To provide a hands-on experience and to demonstrate the significant research and development work being done at Fort Detrick and how it transcends into civilian medicine, subject experts from the USAMRMC Technology Transfer Office/Office of Research and Technology Applications, U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency, U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Activity, the Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center and the Director for Materiel, all provided exhibits related to the products their respective organizations have developed in pursuit of improving the lives of soldiers on the battlefield.
The visit concluded with a tour of Area B, during which a question-and-answer session regarding ongoing environmental restoration efforts and progress was “extremely helpful and provided much insight,” according to Alderman Michael O’Connor.
