SEOUL, South Korea – Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) highlighted past and present achievements for women March 20 at the CNFK 2014 Women’s History Month program at the Navy Club at U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan.

Following opening remarks by Rear Adm. Lisa Franchetti, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea, Yeoman 2nd Class Abigail Lispier delivered a presentation on prominent women role models, such as U.S. Navy Adm. Michelle Howard and Pakistani women’s rights activist Malala Yousafzai.

“These women, along with countless others, demonstrate the importance of writing women back into history,” said Lispier. “Their lives and their work inspire girls and women to achieve their full potential, and encourage boys and men to respect the diversity and depth of women’s experiences and accomplishments.”

Following the presentation, Aviation Ordnancemen 2nd Class Natalie Martin and her performance group provided an interpretive dance that portrayed the struggles women have faced as they have advanced in society.

As the room applauded, the event’s host, Chief Mass Communication Specialist Wendy Wyman, introduced the event’s guest speaker, Chief Personnel Specialist Alicia Keller, who discussed International Women’s Day and its theme, “equality for women is progress for all.”

“The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation,” said Keller. “We have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into universities, and women can work while having a family. Women have real choices.”

Continuing Chief Keller’s message about the advancement of women in society, Pak, Chong Mi, a U.S. Navy civilian, performed the song “You Raise Me Up.”

“All beautiful talents were given to men and women for a wonderful world and to share a good and happy life equally,” said Pak. “This program gives a good reminder to everyone that women are needed and that equal opportunity for everyone is a cheerful thing.”

Following Pak’s musical performance, Franchetti and Keller participated in a cake cutting ceremony to conclude the Women’s History Month program.
