MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - Hidden in the basement of Little Hall, sits the Marine Corps Base Quantico Bowling Center like a precious secret waiting to be found.

On Thursday, March 14, 2014, the center hosted a bowling special, from 3-11 p.m., where mothers and their sons bowled three games and rented shoes for $10.

“[Some places host] a father/daughter dance, and sometimes mothers and sons get left out,” said Jon Blanton, bowling center manager. “It’s a great price, and as a service, we are supposed to be here for the Marines and their families, so this is a way to give a little something back.”

Although the special was marketed toward mothers and sons, Blanton says his desire is to provide a place for the entire family to enjoy.

“I think families are important,” said Blanton.

This is just a way to support the family for general family cohesion.

Chantal Jeannot, a retired Navy lieutenant, took her son, Sebastien, 5, to the event and said she didn’t regret the decision.

“I’m trying to introduce him to new things, and the price attracted us here,” said Jeannot. “He’s having a good time. I would definitely bring him back.”

According to Blanton, seeing the smile on Sebastien’s face and watching him dance to the music indicated the success of the event and the intent behind it.

“I want to see people having fun,” said Blanton. “Ten people or 100 people, if they’re having a good time, that’s all I care about. That’s what we’re here for.”

Paul Hale, a bowling center recreation attendant, agreed with Blanton and added that the center may provide something that some aboard base are looking for.

“This is a place to make memories with your friends or family,” said Hale. “Sometimes options are limited, and some complain that there’s not much to do around here. This gives a place to go together and have fun, in a very friendly environment, while not paying much.”
