CAMP KAZMA, Kuwait- Two 108th Sustainment Brigade (Sust. Bde.) units participated in the Kuwait National Guard M9 Pistol Challenge Feb. 19, at Camp Kazma, Kuwait.

The KNG M9 Pistol Challenge is the third of six events that the KNG Sports Union hosts annually. The events include a day of track and field, the M16/M4 Rifle Challenge, table tennis, an obstacle course and swimming.

It serves as a cultural exchange by allowing U.S. troops and KNG soldiers time to interact with each other.

“Doing events like this with the KNG will improve our relationship by allowing our soldiers to see how they do things and vise versa,” said Capt. Rahman Funn, battalion operations officer for the 751st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB), 108th Sust. Bde. of Newberry, S.C. “We are looking for future opportunities to build the bond with the Kuwait National Guard through our maintenance [program], ordnance missions and staff missions.”

The event not only is an opportunity for building relationships, but also for U.S. soldiers to improve upon their marksmanship skills.
The shooting challenge requires each Soldier to fire one handed and fire two clips of 10 rounds into a target 25 meters away. The event is scored based on rounds that are closest to the bullseye.

“It was fun shooting with the Kuwait National Guard and their shooting style is challenging,” said Sgt. Manuel Gomez, an ammunition specialist for the 163rd Ordnance Detachment out of Tustin, Calif. 751 CSSB, 108th Sust. Bde. “I would love to shoot with the KNG again, and I plan on taking these skills home and improving on all aspects of my shooting.”

Lt. Col. Muhammad Alhadad, Armored Shop commander said the KNG is happy and honored to be participating with the U.S. forces.
“Usually this is a competition we have between our units, but having another unit like the U.S. Army, which is the best Army in the world, makes us proud that they would accept our invitation to compete and enhance the relationship between the U.S. Army and the Kuwait National Guard,” said Alhadad.

Alhadad said the relationship is something they look forward to strengthening in the future.

“We value the exchange of experiences with the U.S. Army because they have more experience than us and we will benefit from that,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Nasir Muhammad Muri with the KNG.

Funn said this is an enduring mission picked up from the 143rd CSSB as part of the key leader engagements the U.S. Army does with the Kuwait National Guard.

“We will be passing this mission to the unit that takes our place at the end of our tour in Kuwait,” said Funn. “Our relationship with the Kuwait National Guard and people of Kuwait is vital to the success of our sustainment missions that are ongoing throughout the region.”
