NAVAL HOSPITAL PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Every day, Naval Hospital Pensacola strives to provide a safe environment for its beneficiaries to ensure they receive the best care possible.

To increase awareness of patient safety initiatives, NHP will be participating in the National Patient Safety Foundation’s Patient Safety Awareness Week March 2–8.

“We [the staff of NHP] are here to keep our patients safe and protect them from harm while they are in our care,” said Cmdr. Marnie Buchanan, special assistant, Quality Management, NHP. “Everything we do at NHP is about patient safety.”

The theme for this year’s Patient Safety Week is “Navigate Your Health … Safely,” which highlights the need for health care providers to ensure that patients are engaged in the health care process. Throughout the week, the staff at NHP will be participating in activities that emphasize patient safety. The activities will include a patient safety trivia game, an interactive activity to recognize potential safety issues, a patient education table and posters that staff have created that demonstrate excellence in patient safety.

“The activities are to promote a culture of patient safety amongst our staff and patients and to demonstrate our commitment to patient safety,” said Wayne Jensen, patient safety manager, NHP.

As focused as NHP is on patient safety, true patient safety requires a partnership between the hospital staff and patients. Patients are always encouraged to share experiences that may improve patient safety for everyone that visits the hospital, whether it’s for a routine exam or surgery.

“Everyone is responsible for taking care of each other, this includes patients and staff,” said Buchanan. “Patient safety begins and ends with each of us.”
