TUSTIN, Calif. – John Bayard Taylor Campbell III of the 45th Congressional District attended a deployment ceremony for the 419th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at the Tustin Armed Forces Reserve Center Feb. 22, which will be deploying more than 60 soldiers to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The 419th CSSB will be supporting sustainment and retrograde operations in the Afghanistan Theater of operation. Members of the sustainment headquarters are from California and Arizona.

“Our main mission is to support retrograde operations, but I want to make sure, most of all, to protect of my soldiers from our enemies, which include the Taliban,” said Anthony T. Huy, 419th CSSB detachment commander. “We have been through intense training for readiness and we have a ‘Can Do’ attitude.”

The 419th CSSB will report to their mobilization station in Texas to conduct additional administrative and training requirements for transition to active duty. After this training, the soldiers will deploy overseas to perform its mission of convoy security operations and sustainment support operations in Afghanistan.

Hundreds of friends and family sat under a canvas canopy, cheering and applauding for their loved ones. For many, this was not their first deployment ceremony.

“I am proud to be a company commander for this deployment,” said Capt. Raymond Pharsono, 419th CSSB HHC commander. “Of course we want to accomplish our mission, but most of all we want to bring every one of our soldiers home.”

Other dignitaries that attended this ceremony included Maj. Gen. Megan P. Tatu, 79th Sustainment Support Command commanding general, and Al Murray, mayor of Tustin.

This will be the battalion’s third deployment to the Middle East since 2001.
